What is popcorn lung?

You may have heard the term popcorn lung, but what exactly is it?

First of all, Popcorn lung (bronchiolitis obliterans) is not cancer.  It is an extremely rare type of lung disease which causes scar tissue to build up in the lungs, restricting airflow.1

The term ‘Popcorn lung’ came about because the condition was first noticed in a group of workers in a popcorn factory where a chemical called diacetyl was used to create popcorn’s buttery taste. However, more research is needed to determine whether this is an actual link, or if a certain amount of diacetyl might cause damage2.

The Popcorn Lung Myth Explained

The evidence relating to diacetyl and vape pens

So, what’s the link between diacetyl and e-cigarettes? In 2016, a single US study3 looked at whether e-cigarette liquids available at the time contained diacetyl. It found that 39 of the 51 e Liquid flavours tested contained some level of diacetyl, leading to the idea that the liquid could be linked to popcorn lung.

However, this study didn’t look at whether there was a link between e-cigarette use and popcorn lung in people. So far, there’s no good evidence to suggest that e-cigarettes could cause popcorn lung.
